The Area



Llancayo House is situated in its own Local Wildlife Area designated parkland grounds within Monmouthshire: approximately 1.25 miles from 'Britain in Bloom' Usk with it's boutique shops, restaurants and traditional pubs, and 8.5 miles from the historic market town of Abergavenny which is on the doorstep of the Black Mountains. It is easily commutable to towns and villages near Monmouth, Newport, Cardiff and Bristol.

The monthly rental price includes a weekly room clean/service, with fresh bed linen provided, and all utilities (electricity, super-fast fibre broadband, central heating and hot water). You will also have an allocated car parking space in the secure car park, which is monitored by CCTV. The only additional charge to the rent will be a pro rata contribution to the monthly Council Tax charge for the house.

Llancayo House, which previously offered luxury hotel accommodation, is a magnificent Georgian Grade II Listed mansion house set in sylvan surroundings, featuring 10 spacious rooms with either king/twin beds. Each bedroom is fully furnished and has a flat screen smart TV, desk, mini-fridge and private ensuite facilities (WC, basin and shower or bath).  There is shared use of a substantially sized character kitchen on the ground floor, and there is a laundry room with free use of washing machine and tumble dryer. A house manager is available every day to provide assistance. There is also shared use of a large dining room and drawing room/lounge.

 The house has CCTV, a modern fire system and a platform lift.

Architecture:
Llancayo House is a Grade II Listed Georgian Mansion building. Nicholaus Pevsner, the renowned architect, described the house as follows: "Quite a sizeable three-storeyed double pile block, the South Front of five regular bays with angle quoins. The three bay East (entrance) front, clearly built at the same time, is by contrast an eccentric composition. Glazed windows in the centre bay only, and a small timber porch on Doric columns carrying an elegant iron balcony".

History:
Some information below is from Bradney's History of Monmouthshire and the National Archive.
The Lower Llancayo Estate (i.e. the Llancayo House Estate) originally belonged to Edward ap Jenkin, who lived there is 1535. He was also a tenant of the land belonging to the Chantery of the Trinity in Usk church. The great grandson of Edward ap Jenkin, William Powell, squandered the estate and in 1697 the Llancayo Estate became the property of Sir Hopton Williams. At the beginning of the 19th Century, Edward Berry bought the estate and built the present mansion onto the old house.

Edward Berry was a prestigious velvet merchant, who worked in Spital Square, London (Kents Directory 1794): An alphabetical List of the Names and Places of Abode of the Directors of Companies, Persons in Public Business, Merchts., and other eminent Traders in the Cities of London and Westminster, and Borough of Southwark.
